Building water and tanks
In many Colombian cities buildings have a water reserve tank, and some areas suffer rationing or cuts. Knowing this avoids surprises when renting.
How it works
Water arrives in the building's network, is stored in a tank and distributed by pumps. If public supply is interrupted, the tank can supply for a few hours.
What to ask when renting
- Is there a reserve tank and how much autonomy does it give?
- Is there a history of cuts or rationing in the area?
- Who pays for the pump and maintenance?
- Is hot water central or individual?
Maintenance and health
Tanks should be cleaned periodically by authorised companies. Ask the administration when the last cleaning was.
Saving water
Check for leaks, use flow reducers and report drips. During droughts, restrictions may apply.
Claims
If service fails repeatedly, submit a claim to the water utility and the administration.
Frequently asked questions
Is tap water potable?
In many cities yes, but check with the utility and neighbours.
What is rationing?
A scheduled supply restriction due to scarcity or maintenance.
Who cleans the tank?
