Digital Nomads in Colombia

The digital nomad visa requires proof of net income of at least 3 SMMLV (about COP 5,252,715 per month in 2026) earned from outside Colombia. Here is what you need to decide whether it fits your case and where to start.

Who can apply

People who work remotely for companies or clients outside Colombia, or who develop a digital project of interest to the country. Pay from companies or individuals domiciled in Colombia is not allowed under this category.

The requirement that decides most applications: income

Income must be met in each of the last three months and is not averaged. If one month falls below the threshold, the application can be denied even if the average is high. Bank statements are the primary proof; invoices or an accountant letter do not replace them.

Documents usually requested

  • Bank statements for the last three months showing net monthly income.
  • Contracts or an employer letter proving remote work for clients abroad.
  • A medical assistance plan covering accident, illness, hospitalization, disability, maternity, repatriation and death for the full visa term (Resolution 5477).
  • A motivational letter, especially for digital entrepreneurs.

Where and when to apply

Applying from abroad at a consulate is generally safer than trying to switch from tourist status inside Colombia. The visa can be granted for up to 2 years. Always confirm current requirements on the Cancillería visa pages before paying or filing.
