Water and food: taking care in the first days in Colombia
In the first days in a new country, your body adapts to climate, food and water. Some precautions reduce discomfort. This guide is informational.
Water
Drink bottled or filtered water while adapting, especially in coastal or rural areas. In many cities network water is potable, but your stomach may need time.
Food
Start with moderate portions of new foods. Prefer well-cooked dishes and places with good turnover. Avoid excess spice, fat or alcohol in the first days.
Hydration
At altitude and in heat more fluid is lost. Drink regularly.
Rest
Travel fatigue and time difference affect digestion and mood. Sleep well.
Hygiene
Wash your hands often and carry hand sanitiser.
If there is discomfort
Hydrate, eat lightly and rest. Consult if there is fever, persistent diarrhoea or vomiting that prevents hydration.
Medicines
Ask pharmacies about oral rehydration salts.
