Banking and payments in the first quarter
The first months in Colombia require organising payments: rent, utilities, phone, transport and shopping. Understanding the available methods makes life easier.
Payment methods
- Bank transfers and PSE.
- Debit and credit cards.
- Digital wallets such as Nequi or Daviplata.
- Cash, still useful in markets and taxis.
First steps
Open an account, enable digital banking and dynamic key, and set up alerts. If you cannot open an account yet, use an international card and withdraw carefully.
Recurring payments
Direct debit for utilities, and reminders for rent. Keep receipts.
Costs
Check management fee, transfer and ATM fees, and the 4x1000 tax.
Security
Never share keys, avoid public networks and review your transactions often.
Currency
If you receive money from abroad, compare exchange rates and fees.
