Savings vs checking account
When you open a bank account in Colombia you will see two main options: savings and checking. They look alike but serve different uses and carry different costs. Choosing well from the start avoids unnecessary fees and makes payments and transfers easier.
What each one is
A savings account is designed to hold money and earn modest returns. It usually comes with a debit card, ATM access and digital banking, with limits or fees on certain movements.
A checking account is designed for frequent movements, mainly for companies and independent professionals. It allows payments by cheque and often offers overdraft or credit lines, with other costs and requirements.
Which costs to ask about
- Monthly account and debit card management fee.
- Cost of transfers to other banks and PSE payments.
- Cost of withdrawals at the bank's own and other networks' ATMs.
- Cost of international transfers, both received and sent.
- The financial transactions tax (GMF, commonly called 4x1000) and possible exemption for a designated savings account.
Which one for a newly arrived foreigner
For daily life (rent, utilities, shopping) a savings account with digital banking is usually enough. If you have a company or invoice often, a business checking account can be useful. Ask the bank which documents it requires: some ask for a cédula de extranjería, others accept a passport with a valid visa for certain products.
Before opening
Compare at least two banks and one digital wallet. Ask for the fee table in writing. Check the digital banking conditions in your language and the daily transfer limits. Keep your contact details up to date.
Frequently asked questions
What is the 4x1000?
It is the financial transactions tax: generally 4 pesos per 1,000 moved. Exemption mechanisms exist for designated accounts; confirm with your bank.
Can I have both accounts?
Yes, many people combine savings for personal use and checking for business.
Do I need a visa to open an account?
It depends on the bank and product. Ask which documents they accept for your immigration status.
If you want guidance on migration requirements, you can contact Colombia Visa Legal. When a procedure is online, Cancillería recommends doing it directly; professional guidance helps you understand the process, it does not replace the official source.
