Landline in HOA

Although almost everyone uses a mobile phone, in apartment buildings and gated complexes (horizontal property, or PH) the landline, intercom and doorman lines are still part of daily life. This guide explains when a landline is worth contracting and what to check if your lease already includes one.

Do you really need a landline?

For most foreigners the answer is no: a mobile phone and messaging apps cover almost everything. Still, some procedures, deliveries or security services use the landline as a contact, and some internet packages include it at no extra cost.

What to check in an internet and phone bundle

Many operators sell internet and a landline in the same plan. Ask whether the line can be dropped to reduce the bill, what calls to mobiles and long-distance cost, and whether installation fees apply. Always compare the final price with taxes.

Intercom, doorman and emergency contact

In a residential complex the front desk usually calls your apartment by intercom or the mobile number you registered. Give your updated number to the administration and the front desk, and tell them who is authorized to enter. Register an emergency contact.

If the lease includes the line

Check whose name the service is in, what debts it has and what happens when the contract ends. Ask for a copy of the latest bill and put in writing who covers each cost. When you return the property, request a clearance for utilities.

Frequently asked questions

Can I cancel the landline without losing internet?

It depends on the plan and operator; ask whether the price changes when telephony is removed.

Can the front desk call my mobile?

Yes, if you register your number with the administration or the front desk.

Who pays the installation?

It is defined by the operator contract and your agreement with the landlord; put it in writing.
