The tax residence certificate proves to another country that you are a tax resident of Colombia. It is used to avoid double taxation and to access treaty benefits.

What it is for

Banks, employers and foreign authorities may request it to apply reduced withholding rates or benefits under treaties to avoid double taxation.

Who issues it

The DIAN issues it to those who meet tax residence conditions in Colombia. It is requested through official channels, with your RUT updated.

General requirements

  • Updated RUT.
  • Passport or cédula de extranjería.
  • Evidence of stay in the country.
  • Information on the country and year for which you request it.

Tax residence

In general, a person who stays more than 183 days in a 365-day period is considered resident, among other conditions. Consult an accountant.

Timing

Deadlines vary; apply in advance. Check whether the receiving country requires an apostille or translation.
