Civil registry and foreigners
The civil registry documents births, marriages and deaths. If you have a child in Colombia, marry or need civil status documents, this procedure matters.
Births
A baby born in Colombia is registered at a notary or registrar with the live-birth certificate and parents' documents. The civil registry later allows passports and nationality procedures under applicable rules.
Marriages
They can be held before a notary or judge. Foreigners usually need a passport, civil status documents and sometimes apostilles or translations.
Foreign documents
Documents from other countries (birth, marriage certificates) usually need an apostille and official translation to be accepted.
Deaths
They are registered with a medical certificate and ID. For repatriation, there are additional procedures with the consulate.
