SOAT and vehicle insurance
In Colombia, SOAT (Mandatory Traffic Accident Insurance) is required for every vehicle on the road. There are also voluntary insurances covering damage and liability.
SOAT
It covers medical costs of traffic accident victims, including drivers, passengers and pedestrians, up to legal limits. It does not cover damage to the vehicle.
Voluntary insurance
- Liability: damage to third parties.
- Comprehensive: damage to your own vehicle, loss by theft or collision.
- Assistance: towing, designated driver and more.
How to contract it
SOAT is bought from authorised insurers, online or at points of sale. Verify authenticity in the RUNT to avoid forgeries.
Expiry
SOAT expires annually. Driving without it brings fines.
For foreigners
If you buy or rent a vehicle, require valid SOAT. If you bring a foreign vehicle, check temporary import rules.
