Used car purchase: caution
Buying a used car or motorbike in Colombia can be a good deal, but it also carries risks. Document and mechanical checks are what protect you most.
Document verification
Ask for the ownership card, SOAT, technical-mechanical inspection and tradition certificate. Check in the RUNT that the vehicle has no liens, pledges or theft reports. The seller must be the registered owner.
Mechanical inspection
Take the vehicle to a trusted workshop or an expert inspection. Check the engine, chassis, mileage and signs of crashes or repairs.
Transfer
The transfer is done before the traffic authorities with buyer and seller documents. Ask about taxes, fees and processing times. A foreigner needs valid ID and, sometimes, a RUT.
Safe payment
Avoid paying large sums in cash. Use transfers and formalise the sale contract. Do not hand over money before verifying documents.
Insurance
Take out or renew SOAT and consider additional liability or comprehensive insurance.
