Driving in Colombia as a foreigner
Driving in Colombia can be practical for exploring regions, but traffic, mountain roads and local rules require preparation.
Licence
Tourists can usually drive with their home licence for a limited time, and many recommend carrying an international permit too. Residents may need to exchange or validate their licence; check requirements with the Ministry of Transport or traffic authorities.
Vehicle documents
To drive you must carry your licence, valid SOAT, the technical-mechanical inspection (for vehicles that require it) and the ownership card. If renting, confirm the contract includes insurance and check for prior damage.
Rules and customs
Respect speed limits, seat belt use and plate-based restrictions ("pico y placa") in cities such as Bogotá and Medellín. There are photo-enforcement cameras and fines may reach the owner.
Roads
Mountain roads are winding, with rain and fog. Avoid driving at night outside cities if you do not know the route, plan stops and check road conditions.
Insurance
SOAT is mandatory. Consider extra liability or comprehensive cover if you will use a car frequently.
