Payroll as a foreigner
If you work in Colombia on a local contract, payroll has its own rules: salary, benefits and contributions. If you are a foreigner, immigration and tax requirements are added.
What payroll includes in Colombia
Besides salary, the employer usually pays social benefits (service bonus, severance and interest) and contributions to health, pension and occupational risk. Amounts and percentages are set by law and change over the years.
Work authorisation
To work on a local contract you need a visa or permit that authorises it. The employer must know your immigration status and, in many cases, report your hiring to Migración Colombia.
Bank account and payment
Payroll is normally paid into a Colombian bank account. Check that the account is in your name and that details match your ID.
Taxes
The employer applies withholdings according to law; you may have to file depending on your income and tax residence. Consult an accountant.
Contracts and remote work
If you work for a foreign company, Colombian payroll does not apply, but your immigration and tax situation still matter. Review your contract and visa.
Frequently asked questions
Can I work on a tourist visa?
In general, no; it does not authorise paid work under a local contract. Check your case.
Who pays social security?
In an employment contract, employer and worker contribute according to law.
What if I work for a foreign company?
There is no Colombian payroll, but you should review your visa and tax obligations.
If you want guidance on migration requirements, you can contact Colombia Visa Legal. When a procedure is online, Cancillería recommends doing it directly; professional guidance helps you understand the process, it does not replace the official source.
