Climate by city: what to expect living in Colombia
Colombia has no seasons like temperate countries; climate depends mostly on altitude. Understanding this helps you choose a city and pack well.
Thermal floors
- Hot land (up to about 1,000 m): heat and humidity, such as Cartagena, Barranquilla and Santa Marta.
- Temperate land (1,000–2,000 m): pleasant climate, such as Medellín, Cali and the Coffee Region.
- Cold land (2,000–3,000 m): cool climate, such as Bogotá and Tunja.
- Páramo (above 3,000 m): cold and wind.
Rainy seasons
Many regions have two rainy seasons a year, with variations by area and phenomena such as El Niño and La Niña. Check the Ideam forecast.
Clothing and gear
In high-altitude cities, bring layers and a raincoat; on the coast, light clothing and sunscreen.
Choosing a city
Think about your tolerance for heat, humidity and altitude. If possible, test a few days before committing.
Housing
Check humidity, ventilation and air conditioning according to climate.
