Colombia Visa Changes 2026: What Expats, Investors and Retirees Should Know

Colombia’s immigration framework did not freeze in 2022. In 2026 there are critical deadlines, investment thresholds recalculated by the new minimum wage, and increased scrutiny on some procedures. This summary covers what actually matters.

1. Mandatory permanent resident visa transfer

Holders of Permanent Resident visas issued under regulations prior to Resolution 5477 of 2022 must complete the transfer before October 31, 2026 (Resolution 9316 of 2024). Without it, Migración Colombia will not issue or renew the cédula de extranjería. The process is virtual via the Cancillería platform.

2. Updated investment thresholds (2026 SMMLV)

The 2026 legal monthly minimum wage (approx. COP $1,750,905) raised every amount tied to SMMLV:

• Real estate: 350 SMMLV ≈ COP $612.8 million (~USD 160,000–166,000)
• Company / Partner: 100 SMMLV ≈ COP $175.1 million (~USD 45,000–47,000)

3. Digital nomads: minimum income 3 SMMLV

4. Medical insurance: Resolution 5477 requirement

5. More visible immigration controls

In 2026 verification operations and expulsions of foreigners in irregular status or with criminal records have increased. Those who remain as tourists beyond the authorized period or fail to regularize face higher risk of administrative measures.

1. If you hold an old resident visa: start the transfer early.
2. If you plan to invest: verify the current SMMLV before signing deeds or incorporating a company.
3. If you are a digital nomad: confirm your statements meet the threshold every month.
4. Obtain a medical assistance plan that meets Resolution 5477 before filing the visa.
