Colombia Extends Visa Transfer Deadline for Permanent Residents to October 31, 2026

If you hold a Permanent Resident visa issued under regulations prior to Resolution 5477 of 2022, you have until October 31, 2026 to complete the mandatory transfer. Here is what it means, who it applies to, what happens if you miss it, and how to do it correctly.

Who does this transfer apply to?

The transfer is mandatory for all holders of a Permanent Resident visa obtained under regulations prior to Resolution 5477 of 2022 (i.e., before October 2022). Visas issued after that date are already under the current system and do not require this specific procedure.

This is not a traditional “renewal.” It is an update of the migratory registry to align the document with the current framework. The transfer does not erase accumulated years of residence.

What happens if you miss the deadline?

The main and most serious consequence is that Migración Colombia will not be able to issue or renew your cédula de extranjería. Without a valid cédula, daily life becomes immediately complicated:

• Difficulty opening or maintaining bank accounts
• Problems signing rental or purchase contracts
• Obstacles affiliating to or maintaining EPS health coverage
• Complications with notarial and commercial procedures
• Risk of migratory irregularity during controls

That is why Cancillería has insisted on not waiting until the final month.

The process is 100% virtual

The transfer is completed through the official Cancillería visa platform. Physical presence at an office is not required to start the process. The authority recommends doing it directly, without unauthorized intermediaries, to protect personal information.

Main requirements (under current regulations):

• Meet the general visa application requirements
• Copy of the visa to be transferred and of the corresponding cédula de extranjería
• Migratory movements certificate issued by Migración Colombia
• Document proving the activity the foreigner carries out in the country
• Letter stating the reason for the transfer

For visas issued before the year 2000 where the original document cannot be provided, a sworn letter is allowed together with the expanded migratory movements certificate.

How much does it cost?

There is a study fee for the application, paid through the official platform. The exact amount should be verified at the time of starting the process, as it may be updated. There are no additional payments outside the official platform.

Practical recommendation

Do not leave this process for September or October 2026. Systems can become saturated and any documentary observation creates delays. Those who act early avoid unnecessary problems.
