Sun protection: coast and altitude

Colombia is near the equator, so solar radiation is high in many areas. On the coast because of the heat and in high-altitude cities because of the thinner atmosphere, sun protection is essential.

UV index

Check the day's UV index in weather services. High values call for protection even under cloudy skies.

Basic measures

  • Broad-spectrum, high-factor sunscreen, reapplied every two hours and after swimming or sweating.
  • Hat or cap and UV-protective sunglasses.
  • Light long-sleeved clothing during long exposure.
  • Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Coast

The sun, reflection on water and sand increase exposure. Reapply often and seek shade.

Altitude

At greater height there is less atmospheric filtering; the sun can burn quickly even when it is cool.

Skin care

Check moles and skin changes and consult a dermatologist with any doubt.

Children

Protect children and babies especially with shade, clothing and age-appropriate products.
