Tatacoa at night: skies

One of the most remembered experiences in the Tatacoa Desert is watching the night sky. Low light pollution and dry air offer very favourable conditions for stargazing.

Observatory

There is an astronomical observatory with telescopes and guided talks on constellations. Check hours and book, especially in high season.

When to go

Moonless or low-moon nights offer the best visibility. Check the lunar calendar and weather forecast.

What to bring

A light jacket (nights can be cool), red-light flashlight, repellent and water. A tripod and a camera with manual mode allow photographing the sky.

Lodging

Nearby guesthouses and camping. Sleeping there avoids travelling at night on tracks.

Safety

Do not stray from lit areas without company, watch the terrain and respect trails.

Respect

Avoid bright lights and noise, leave no rubbish and respect other visitors.
