Barranquilla visitor
Barranquilla is famous for its Carnival, proclaimed by UNESCO a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. But the city can also be enjoyed outside festival time.
The Carnival
It is held in the days before Lent, normally in February or March. It includes the Battle of Flowers, the Grand Tradition Parade, the Grand Parade of Comparsas and the Orchestra Festival. Dates change each year.
How to prepare
Book lodging and tickets in advance, wear light, comfortable clothing, sunscreen and bring water. Agree meeting points with your group and keep valuables safe.
Outside Carnival
Visit the Gran Malecón del Río, El Prado neighbourhood, the Museo del Caribe, the Parque Cultural del Caribe and local food: butifarras, egg arepa and pigeon-pea stew.
Climate and safety
Hot and humid all year. Watch your drink and belongings at mass events.
Tips
Check the official programme and seat prices.
