Studying in Colombia as a foreigner: visa, costs and real requirements

Colombia attracts international students with living costs, recognized universities and climate. The immigration process is clear if done in order: admission → solvency → Resolution 5477 medical plan → visa.

1. Student visa (V or M depending on the case)

The category depends on duration and program type. In practice you need:

• Admission letter or enrollment from an institution recognized by the Ministry of Education
• Proof of economic solvency (own funds, scholarship or sponsorship)
• Medical assistance plan that meets Resolution 5477 (accidents, illness, hospitalization, disability, maternity, repatriation and death) for the full validity period
• Valid passport and background checks as required

Do not use a generic tourist travel insurance policy: it is often rejected on long-stay applications.

2. Indicative costs 2026

• Tuition: varies widely (public vs private; undergraduate vs graduate). Check with the university.
• Housing: room or studio in Medellín/Bogotá from ~COP 800,000–1,800,000/month depending on area.
• Monthly living (excluding tuition): many students report COP 2–4 million/month in main cities.
• Visa medical plan: depends on age and validity; quote providers that issue a consular letter.

3. Common universities and cities

Medellín, Bogotá, Cartagena and the Coffee Region concentrate most international demand. Always verify the program is registered and the admission letter is valid for Cancillería.

4. After the visa

• Cédula de extranjería (Migración Colombia)
• EPS affiliation (if applicable and you have the cédula)
• Visa renewal before expiry if the program continues
