Transport in Colombia for foreigners: apps and metro

Getting around Colombia is easy if you know the options. Cities combine public transport, taxis and apps, and between cities there are buses and flights.

Metro and mass transit

Medellín has the Metro, Metrocable and tram with the Cívica card. Bogotá uses TransMilenio and SITP with a rechargeable card. Cali has the MIO; Cartagena and Barranquilla have their own systems.

Taxis and apps

There are ride-hailing apps and formal taxis. Request the service by app or at safe points, check the plate and driver, and ask about fares.

Intercity buses

They leave from transport terminals. Buy in advance in high season and prefer formal companies.

Domestic flights

They connect major cities and tourist destinations.

Bicycles and motorbikes

There are bike lanes and bike rentals. Motorbike use carries risks and requires a licence and insurance.

Safety

Watch your belongings in crowded vehicles and avoid sharing your location with strangers.

Payments

Carry cash for taxis and small buses, and check each system's payment methods.
