Tax ID (RUT) for foreigners

The Single Tax Registry (RUT) is the DIAN registry that identifies those with tax obligations in Colombia. Many foreigners need it to open accounts, invoice, rent or contract.

What it is for

It identifies the taxpayer before the DIAN, gives the NIT and lets you fulfil obligations such as filing, invoicing or withholding taxes. Some institutions ask for it even if you have no economic activity.

Who must register

Those carrying out economic activities, with income subject to filing or needing tax identification. Consult an accountant about your case.

How it is processed

Online or at DIAN offices, with passport or cédula de extranjería, contact data and economic activity information. Sometimes an electronic signature is requested.

Updating

Changes of address, activity or personal data must be updated in the RUT.

Common errors

Choosing wrong economic activities, not updating data or ignoring assigned responsibilities.
